Advice on Sports Injuries
If you have just injured yourself this is first aid advice for sprains, strains and bruises.
If you think that you might have broken a bone or dislocated a joint you should attend an Accident and Emergency department or a GP as soon as possible.
Rest - |
Stop the activity that has caused the injury |
Ice - |
Apply an ice or cold pack to the injured site for 5 minutes. (Warning : to prevent an ice burn, place a damp towel between the skin and the ice pack) |
Compression - |
Remove the ice or cold pack and apply a firm bandage |
Elevation - |
Elevate the injured limb in a supported position above the level of your heart |
This is known as the R.I.C.E. method of self treatment.
DO NOT: |
- Apply heat |
- Massage your injury |

- Drink alcohol |
These activities increase bleeding and swelling.
